Use of Home Care & Rehabilitation Equipment Increases After Implementation of Care Insurance System
As of April 1, directly after the care insurance system was implemented, the Ministry of Health and Welfare made an inspection of the actual system as it was in progress.
As a result of their examination, they found that the use of all types of services had increased in comparison to the same period last year. Among all the various types of services, the home care and rehabilitation equipment rental service category had the highest increase of 237.5% in comparison to last year's figures.
Further, in regard to designating providers for home care support, by type of service (among the 12 types of services) the number of providers of home care and rehabilitation equipment rental comes in fourth after home care, care center visits, and short-term institutional stay with 3,329 cases. (Refer to Table 1)
"Barrier Free" legislation to ensure that the elderly and physically challenged persons gain more independence of mobility in their daily living was passed by the Diet on May 10, 2000. Also, the council of housing and residential land of the Ministry of Construction is continuing discussions on strategies to construct homes and provide residential land to support a fuller life for the 21st century in which a report will be submitted in July. Incorporated in the interim report are discussions on necessary measures such as (1) Making available "barrier free" housing for elderly persons in the middle to low income groups, (2) Providing sufficient public rental housing for elderly persons, and (3) Providing helpers for daily living, equipping housing with emergency alarm systems, and enriching services as a support to daily living. As such measures are connected with care insurance, they are reflected in the budget requirements for the fiscal year 2001.
As a result of such policy trends, it is expected that the use of home care and rehabilitation equipment will be accelerated.
Largest Number - 625 Companies Participating
625 companies and organizations from 15 countries and 1 territory will participate in our 27th Int. Home Care & Rehabilitation Exhibition, H. C. R. 2000. (Domestic: 512 companies and Overseas: 113 companies) In comparison to H.C.R. '99, there was an increase of 82 companies.
Among the domestic companies participating, there is an increasing number of exhibits in the construction and home equipment category such as rails, slopes, ramps, toilet related products (i.e., portable toilets and diapers), and emergency alarm and wondering alarm systems. Additionally, the implementation of the care insurance has given impetus to further expansion of distribution and sales channels. Noteworthy, among H.C.R. applicants that are gaining prominence are group companies and subsidiaries exhibiting together in a joint effort.
Among the overseas companies, we have one first time participant coming from Italy. Companies coming from Taiwan and Germany to participate have increased this year, and 25 companies, the largest number of companies ever coming from the U. S. will be participating.
This year will be the 10th year we have had companies participating in H.C.R. from overseas of which 1986 was the first year. More than 80% of overseas companies already have agents or subsidiary companies in Japan.
We will not only be providing the latest information on the most superior home care and rehabilitation equipment from hardware to software from within and outside of Japan, but also a place for visitors to have a meaningful interchange at H. C. R. 2000.
