Home Care and Rehabilitation Equipment Industry's Market and Economic Status Survey 2000 - Bulletin

1. Purpose of Survey

The purpose of this survey is to provide various indicators for the industry. We obtained the cooperation of 156 companies of the domestic exhibitors that participated in our 27th Int. Home Care & Rehabilitation Equipment Exhibition.

■ Response Rate: 33% (156 out of 477 companies that participated in H.C.R. 2000)

 

2. Sales Volume by Category of Home Care and Rehabilitation Equipment

Total sales for fiscal year 1999 were approximately 226.8 billion Japanese yen. In comparing the composite ratios of each of the home care and rehabilitation equipment categories, the largest was the Construction/Home Equipment category with 57.8 billion yen making up 25.5% of the total.
Next was Mobility Equipment with 32 billion yen, (14.1%) followed by Bathing Related Equipment with 31.6 billion yen, (13.9%).

3. Results After Implementation of Care Insurance System

(1) Rental Product Categories

  • Companies that responded they had better sales results (answering either "Increased" or "Slightly Increased") for equipment particularly in categories such as Handrails: 60.6 %, Ramps: 55.1%, Wheelchairs: 50.0%, Beds: 50.0%, and Bed Sore Prevention: 44.4%.
  • On the other hand, companies reporting that they did not have good sales results responded with either a "Decreased" or "Slightly Decreased" response in categories such as Bed Sore Prevention: 29.6%, Positioning Aids: 27.3%, Transfer Lifts: 24.0% and Wheelchairs: 22.2% were prominent.
  • Regarding the wheelchairs and bed sore prevention categories, many companies responded with both positive and negative responses and there were clear contrasts between companies.

(2) Home Care & Rehabilitation Equipment Reimbursement Categories

  • Companies responding that they had better sales results with either an "Increased" or "Slightly Increased," response especially in the Toilet Seats: 67.7%, and Bathing Support Aids: 54.0% sectors.
  • On the other hand, companies responding that sales results were not good with either a "Decreased" or "Slightly Decreased" response particularly in sectors such as Portable Bath Tubs: 30.4%, Lift Slings: 18.1%, and Incontinence Care Aids: 14.3% had the highest percentages.

(3) Home Remodeling

  • Companies responding that sales results were better with either an "Increased" or "Slightly Increased" response in two sectors, Handrail Remodeling: 71.4% and Barrier Free Floor Remodeling: 50.0% stood out. In comparison to other categories, few companies of the Home Remodeling sector answered "Slightly Decreased" or "Decreased." They have benefited the most from the Care Insurance System.
